(2769) Mendeleev is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on April 1, 1976 by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai Stepanowitsch Tschernych at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj .
The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .
The asteroid is named after the Russian chemist Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev (1834–1907).
