Tom Belz

Tom Belz (* 7. January 1987 in Offenbach am Main as Thomas Philip Belz ) is a one-legged German climbers, musicians and Explorer.

Life

Belz grew up in Rodgau as the son of an offset printer and an industrial clerk. At the age of 8, Belz developed a rare malignant bone tumor ( osteosarcoma ) and lost his left leg. At the Käthe-Kollwitz-Schule in Offenbach am Main, he completed an apprenticeship as a state-certified social assistant, which was followed by state training as an educator. Belz has been working as a group leader in the day-care facility in the Hainbachtal workshops since 2012. Despite his left hip disarticulation, he played drums in the Frankfurt hardcore / metal band The Green River Burial from 2010 to 2013 . Shortly thereafter, he started with target group-specific posts on social media and at the end of 2017 became Brand Ambassador for the Swiss mountain sports, climbing and outdoor label Mammut . He became known to the public in 2018 through various obstacle courses and climbing the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro .

He gained a lot of attention with the film Mbuzi Dume - Starke Ziege , which was shown for the first time in selected cinemas worldwide as part of the European Outdoor Film Tour 2018/2019 (EOFT for short). In the approx. 20-minute documentary, Belz describes his friendship with Klaus Siegler, the doctor who treated him at the time, and how he dealt with a supposed disability - my disability is no excuse .

In 2019, Belz received the Made For More Award from Sport Scheck in the Explorer category , an award for special personalities in sport.
