The Tomaschewitsch 111 Pegas ( Russian Томашевич 111 Пегас ) is a Soviet attack aircraft from the time of the Second World War .

development

The Pegas was designed by Dmitri Tomaschewitsch , who wanted to meet the urgent need of the air forces for aircraft to support the ground forces. The aircraft, also known as Project 111, was intended as a cheap and quick-to-produce and easy-to-use makeshift aid for mass production that was supposed to fill the gap between the Po-2, used as a light night bomber, and the IL-2 . For this reason, a construction made mostly of wood with fabric covering was also planned. The pilot's cabin was clad with steel plates to protect against ground fire. As drive two found radial engines of the type M-11 use. This had been in series production since 1927 and was available in sufficient numbers. A special feature was the placement of the fuel tanks freely under the wings. In the event of damage from combat operations, they should simply be thrown off and the return flight carried out with two armored emergency containers with a capacity of 16 liters located in the fuselage. Both single-seat and two-seat variants with a shooting range behind the pilot's cabin were planned. The main armament was either a 37 mm or two 23 mm cannons . A total of four prototypes were created. No. 01 to 03 had an elongated nose cone, which was shortened in prototype No. 04, which was tested in 1943. The engines used turned out to be far too weak to provide the desired performance for an aircraft of this class. A maximum speed of only 190 km / h was achieved in the test flights. The Pegas project was therefore discontinued, among other things because the course of the war was less tense at this point and the industry was now producing a sufficient and steadily increasing number of attack aircraft and front bombers.
