Banquet scene

The Tomba della Nave ("Tomb of the Ship") in the Monterozzi necropolis near Tarquinia was discovered in 1958. It is a painted Etruscan tomb that dates back to between 500 and 450 BC. Is dated. The burial chamber was robbed when it was found. Some of the paintings were already very faded and not in good condition. For this reason, they were removed from the wall and taken to the National Archaeological Museum of Tarquinia .

A staircase led to the underground burial chamber. Its left wall is badly damaged, but once showed a seascape with two ships, which gave the grave its name. Crew members are depicted on the better preserved ship. Other ships are poorly preserved. A rocky landscape is shown next to the ships. To the right of this is a banquet scene that continues on the back wall. It begins on the left wall with a low table and two large vessels, next to it stands a musician playing the lyre. The actual banquet scene on the back wall shows various people lying on Klinen . In between stand naked servants. The banquet scene continues on the right wall, where a Kline and a servant figure can be seen. Musicians are shown to the right of this. The back wall with the entrance shows two figures on the left, maybe dancers. To the left of the door is a kline with two figures. There are various vessels next to it.
