Tomentation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Tomentierung the coverage is Chitinoberfläche an insect referred to with short hair-like outgrowths. Insects can be found in different parts of their body, e.g. B. on certain leg links, on the ventral side or on the wing covers ( elytra ) of the beetles . The tomentation gives the body surface a velvety sheen and can form colored spots, which can be of importance as a drawing for the determination of the species.

The tomentation is not to be confused with a real hair or bristle, which consists of much longer, thread-like chitin outgrowths of the insects. Scaling, such as on the wing covers of many weevils , is also not referred to as tomentation.
