Tonda

Tonda is a village near Montaione in the Italian metropolitan city of Florence , Tuscany .

location

Tonda lies on the spur of a calcareous hill north and above the Carfalo River. It consists of the parish church of St. Nicholas ( S. Niccolò ), a castle and around 10 historical groups of buildings and 6 new buildings. To the east of it lies the former Castellare di Tonda castle on the access road.

history

Tonda was first mentioned in a document in 1000. It was assigned to the province of Pisa in 1209 , which had a castle with a tower built there for protection.

The inhabitants of Tonda were free until Emperor Otto IV in a deed dated December 28, 1212 assigned the Tonda Castle with all its accessories, the court and the inhabitants as a fief to two noble Pisan brothers Ventilio and Guido and their heirs. In the 14th century the village was conquered by Florence and committed to a bailiff .

Tonda became independent in the 15th century and was thus able to determine the grazing rights, the start of the grape harvest, and the permission to grind grain. With the reorganization of Tuscany, Tonda, like other smaller castles, was subordinated to the much larger Montaione Castle. The residents led a poor life under the Strozzi family in the mezzadria called half - lease .

Population development

In 1551 there were 290 inhabitants and in 1839 even 353. After the Second World War, the village was largely abandoned due to the rural exodus with increasing industrialization, the buildings were slowly decayed, and the fields were overgrown.

Tourist use

Tonda

In 1970, the Swiss holiday home provider Hapimag bought the village. It was then renovated with exemplary respect for the preservation of the historical building fabric. In 2009, new buildings were erected using mainly regionally available building materials, which resulted in an attractive combination of old and new without affecting Tonda's village-like character. The planning was carried out by Peter Bergmann, Yves Baumann and Roberto Pascual, who have been running the Bauzeit architectural office in Biel , Switzerland since 1995 . On this project, they collaborated with construction manager Elisa Pedone from Studio Florulli in Milan and interior designer Pia Schmid from Zurich. The colors of the plaster and natural stone facades were matched to those of the historic buildings, because they integrate into the ensemble from a distance.
