Toolchain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As toolchain (English for tool chain ) is in the software development means a systematic collection of tool programs which (usually another program or system of programs) is used to produce a product. The name is explained by the fact that the tool programs are usually used one after the other in the form of a chain.

A simple toolkit for software development includes a text editor for creating the source code , a compiler , a linker for creating the executable programs as well as libraries for accessing the public routines of the operating system and a debugger . More complex products require a larger tool kit for their creation , so a video game also requires a program for creating 3D models, graphics, sound effects, music and animations.

Toolchain is the name given to successive steps in manufacturing processes and in product development . Here, too, different tools and methods are used for different steps. For example, material is taken from the warehouse, clamped in the machine, processed in various steps, unclamped again, cleaned, and then brought to the next processing station or back to the warehouse.
