A headliner is someone who headlines (English headlines makes). According to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary , the expression has been attested in English since 1896.

In music jargon today, the term mostly describes a "best known" artist, presumed by the audience from the organizer's point of view, among those who appear as musicians or bands at a concert or music festival , or as a DJ in a club . The term comes from the fact that these artists or groups are usually called bold on posters in order to attract as many viewers as possible. As a rule, a headliner plays at the end of the concert and receives the longest playing time. Bands performing before the headliner, is called sliver or opening acts (English supporting act ).
