A rotary head is a machine used to drive the drill string of a drilling rig . It has been replacing the previously common rotary table drive in modern drilling rigs since around the mid-1980s .

The drill string, also known as a drill string, is a pipe string with the drill bit attached to its lower end . The power rotary head is located at the top of the drill string, hence the English name Top Drive ('drive at the top').

Requirements for the machine

In order to be able to drill at all, the power rotary head must be movably mounted in the mast of the drilling rig . In most cases it is moved with a pulley system driven by the drilling rig's lifting gear.

In addition, the power rotary head must be able to mechanically support the entire mass of the drill string, which can be over 1000  t .

Further important for the drilling process by the rotary drilling is the transmission of high pressure drilling fluid into the connected drill pipe . In addition, the power swivel head is used in many cases to handle the linkage.
