Toqi Zargaron

The Toqi Zargaron ( Dome Bazaar of the Jewelers) is a bazaar building in the Uzbek city of Buxoro .

location

The bazaar is located in the historic center of Buxoro in the middle of a street crossing between the Poi Kalon building ensemble in the west and the opposite buildings of the Ulug'bek Madrasa and the Abdulaziz Khan Madrasa in the east. This makes it the most northerly domed bazaar of Buxoro.

history

Toqi Zargaron is also the oldest of the Buxoro domed bazaars. It was built in 1586/87 under Khan Abdullah II . The bazaar originally served as a workshop and market hall for goldsmiths and jewelers. There were over thirty workshops and shops here, where, among other things, jewelry and seals were made and sold. In the meantime, in addition to jewelry, towels and various household accessories are also offered there.

description

Toqi Zargaron is also the largest of the Buxoro domed bazaars. It extends over an area of approximately 43 × 45 m. The large central dome rests on a drum through whose window the central hall of the bazaar receives light. In contrast to the other historic domed bazaars in Buxoro, it is raised and reinforced with ribs. The central dome is surrounded by smaller domes, some of which carry a lantern .
