Pignattara Gate

Tor Pignattara or Torpignattara is the name of a neighborhood called Zona urbanistica 6a in Rome . As part of the urban structure of Rome , it belongs to the VI. Munizipium Prenestino and is located east of the old town. The district extends along Via Casilina, which largely follows the ancient Via Latina . Almost 50,000 people live in Tor Pignattara.

Empty amphorae in the base of the dome

The name Tor Pignattara stirred by in this neighborhood located Mausoleum of Helena ago. In this building, empty amphorae were integrated into the concrete mass ( opus caementitium ) of the dome in order to reduce the weight. These are still visible at the base of the dome to this day. In the Middle Ages, the expression pignatte (Italian for ceramic pot) led to the name of the building and finally the entire district.
