Torell Land is one of the "Lands" designated areas on the Norwegian- administered island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard . The area in the south of the main island of Svalbard is practically uninhabited and covered by glaciers.

etymology

The name "Torell Land" pays homage to the geologist and Ice Age expert Otto Martin Torell , the first director of the Swedish State Geological Institute. In 1858, 1861, 1864 and 1868 he undertook expeditions to Spitzbergen.

geography

Torell-Land forms the connecting bridge between the southern areas of Svalbard. In the south is Sørkapp-Land , in the west, separated by the Hornsund , Wedel-Jarlsberg-Land , in the northwest is Nathorst-Land and in the northeast is Heer-Land . West of Torell-Land lies the open sea with the Storfjord .
