Towans Hotel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Towans Hotel is a hotel building in the Scottish town of Prestwick in the Council Area South Ayrshire . In 1995 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

history

The building was constructed between 1897 and 1902. Alexander Nisbet Paterson , a close colleague of Charles Rennie Mackintosh , was responsible as the architect. In the 1950s, the parents of the future goalkeeper of the Glasgow Rangers , Norrie Martin , acquired the company. The hotel later passed to Norrie Martin. In 1996 the financially troubled Martin tried to sell the company. Since the potential investors were not allowed to tear down the building due to the existing monument protection, Martin's plans came to nothing. Even an intervention by the House of Commons Phil Gallie in Martin's favor did not change the situation. In August 1996, a fire caused property damage estimated at £ 600,000. The hotel was then restored.

description

The building is located on the northern edge of Prestwick around a hundred meters from the grounds of Glasgow Prestwick Airport. The asymmetrical, one to two-story building complex is designed in the style of the Arts and Crafts movement . The harl-plastered facades are designed with red brick details . Striking, massive chimneys, which are also plastered with Harl, protrude from the slate-covered roof.
