Caruncle of tears

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Human eye, the pink formation in the corner of the eyelid on the right is the tear caruncle

The lacrimal caruncle , the Tränenwärzchen or tears bumps ( Caruncula lacrimalis ) is a nodule-like structure in the nose-side canthus . It is a slightly modified formation of the conjunctiva and is formed by connective tissue interspersed with adipose tissue . The mucous membrane has sebum glands , goblet cells and also some serous glandular tubes .

In many mammals the caruncle is pigmented , in some (including humans) it is slightly hairy.

In the dog an accessory lacrimal gland , the glandula carunculae lacrimalis, is embedded in the lacrimal caruncle. In the other mammals, it has nothing to do with the tear system, so the name is rather misleading.
