Trần Quốc Hiền

Trần Quốc Hiền (* 1965 ) is a Vietnamese lawyer , union official and dissident . He has been imprisoned since 2007 because of his commitment to upholding human rights .

As the head of a law firm in Ho Chi Minh City , Tran Quoc Hien campaigned for farmers whose land was confiscated by the Vietnamese authorities. He was also known for his anti-government posts on the Internet. Tran Quoc Hien is a member of the Internet democracy movement "Block 8406". On January 10, 2007 he was elected spokesman for the independent union “United Organization of Workers and Peasants” (VOAB). This is considered to be the first independent union in Vietnam. He was arrested two days later and sentenced on May 15, 2007 to five years' imprisonment and two more years of house arrest for "propaganda against the state" and "disrupting security" . He is currently being held at Camp Z-30A in Xuan Loc, Dong Nai Province . In February 2009, he and other political prisoners went on a three-day hunger strike to protest the inhumane conditions in the prison.
