Tractebel Energia is a listed Brazilian energy company, which is majority (78%) held by the French group Engie .

The company produces electricity and is the largest private energy supplier in Brazil. The company owns 11 power plants, 6 of which are hydropower plants. Tractebel Energia is part of the Brazilian leading index IBOVESPA .

Company history

Initially the company name was Gerasul , (Abbreviation for Centrais Geradoras do Sul do Brasil SA ). Gerasul was sold to Tractebel, a subsidiary of Suez, in 1998. Gerasul had power plants in the southern Brazilian states of Santa Catarina , Rio Grande do Sul , Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul .

In 2002 Gerasul changed the company name to Tractebel Energia.
