Transfluence pass

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transfluence pass (also called transfluence saddle , sometimes also diffluence pass ) is the place where glacier ice crosses from one valley system to a neighboring one and thus transfluence occurs. Transfluence passes are particularly common in ice flow networks . The direction of flow over the pass can change over the long term, for example if the climatic conditions change. The term is also used for formerly glaciated pass crossings.

Occasionally the term "diffluence passport" is used, sometimes a distinction is made between diffluence and transfluence . The latter expression is used when the crossing does not take place via the lateral slopes of the valley, but already at the point of origin and thus the glacier ice crosses a main watershed into another valley system.

geomorphology

Due to the transfluence, existing pass crossings are abraded from the ice and significantly lowered. Therefore, former transfluence passes are significantly lower than other passes on the same mountain ridge. The convenient function of many Alpine passes is due to the fact that these were glacial transfluence passes, for example the Brenner Pass or the Reschen Pass . Often, former transfluence passes also have a bas-relief with pass lakes caused by Detersion , such as the Malojapass .
