Transnistrian presidential election 1991
The 1991 Transnistrian presidential election ( Russian: Президентские выборы в Приднестровской Молдавской Республике ) was the first presidential election in the internationally unrecognized Eastern European state of Transnistria . They took place on December 1, 1991, before the escalation of the Transnistrian conflict .
The later President Igor Smirnow was able to prevail with 65.4% of the votes against his challengers Grigori Marakuza with 31% and Grigory Blagodarny with 1.5%. The runner-up Marakuza later joined the Smirnov faction and was parliamentary speaker from 1991 to 2005.
