Transnistrian presidential election 2011

The 2011 Transnistrian presidential election ( Russian: Президентские выборы в Приднестровской Молдавской Республике ) was the fifth presidential election in the internationally unrecognized Eastern European state of Transnistria . They took place on December 11, 2011, followed by a runoff election on December 25, 2011. In the course of the election, there was the first change of power since the de facto independence of Transnistria.

Election process

A total of six people stood as candidates, after the first ballot on December 11, 2011, there was a runoff, which took place on December 25, 2011. In the first ballot, long-time President Igor Smirnov surprisingly came in third with 24.7%. The then parliamentary speaker Anatoly Kaminsky achieved 26.3%, Yevgeny Shevchuk , who is considered a reformer , received the most votes with around 38.5%. Only Oleg Khorshan from the Transnistrian Communist Party was able to achieve more than one percent of the vote with 5.1% .

There was a runoff election on December 25, 2011 between Yevgeny Shevchuk and Anatoly Kaminsky. Kaminski was considered a candidate supported by Russia.

In the end, however, Yevgeny Shevchuk clearly prevailed with over 73% of the vote. According to analysts, he was able to win over protest voters in particular and position himself as a reformer. He had previously led an anti-corruption program.

The turnout in the first round was just under 60%, in the runoff election only a little over 50%.
