Tratteggio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tratteggio (Italian for lines, hatching) is a technical term for a style of painting made of fine lines.

history

Even Michelangelo used this technique in his work on frescoes . Under his influence, the cross-hatching developed from it .

application

This painting technique is mainly used by art restorers to fill in a flaw in a painting. The restorer uses pigments with fine lines and strokes that make the painting appear complete when viewed from a distance. The restored part remains recognizable from close up.

This technique is usually chosen out of respect for the original artist of the work, in that the restorer does not imitate his painting style, brushwork and techniques.
