In particular, the company manufactures universal automatic lathes , long and short automatic lathes as well as CNC turning-milling centers. The group is active worldwide with six production sites, five international sales and service companies and 80 agencies. history

The company was founded in 1938 by Hermann Traub in Oberesslingen and just two years later it was producing the 500th automatic lathe. In 1942 the Traub lathes moved to Reichenbach an der Fils, where it is still based today. In 1977 the company form was officially changed from Traub to Traub Drehmaschinen GmbH & Co. KG . By 1979 more than 70,000 cam-controlled lathes had been sold. In 1979 the production of Traub CNC lathes began. The company went public in April 1986. The share capital was DM 22 million at the time of issue. The Traub and van Kempen families held 58% of it. The rest was free float with institutional and private investors. In 1993 Traub AG took over the now privatized Heckert Chemnitzer Werkzugmaschinen GmbH with around 380 employees. In 1994 a joint sales company was founded. In 1994, Traub AG acquired 50.1% of the ordinary shares in Maschinenfabrik Berthold Hermle AG. A year before that, Hermle had set up an international sales force. Due to financial difficulties of the parent company, private investors and senior employees bought the Hermle share package from Traub AG in 1996.

These takeovers and others from French and Italian machine manufacturers in the 80s and 90s put a considerable strain on the financial situation of Traub AG. After sales fell from DM 237.5 million to DM 223.9 million, the company with 1,100 employees had to file for bankruptcy at the beginning of 1997. The lathe division with 450 employees was taken over by Index-Werke in the same year and integrated into the Index Group as an independent subsidiary . To this day, Index / Traub have pursued a two-brand strategy.
