Grieving old woman

The sculpture Mourning Old People is a sculpture to commemorate the victims of the Second World War , created by the sculptor and graphic artist Gerhard Marcks . It was inaugurated with a ceremony on November 4, 1956, the 12th anniversary of the heaviest bombing of Bochum in 1944. Every year on November 4, a wreath is laid here to commemorate the city's top.

The sculpture represents an old woman who is on the lookout. Bowed down in grief, she leans on her cane. The figure, carved from basalt lava, has darkened considerably over the years. A sign in front of the statue proclaims: "the / victims / of / violence / rule / and / war 1933-1945". The location is in front of the Pauluskirche in downtown Bochum .
