TravelBird B.V. was a trading company based in Amsterdam , the Netherlands . It operated the online booking platform of the same name for city trips.

The company was founded on April 26, 2010 by Symen Jansma and Dennis Klompalberts. The strategy is based on filtering a small selection of the supposedly best offers from the large number of travel offers on the Internet. Starting on the Dutch market, TravelBird was also represented in Germany, Belgium, France, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Great Britain, Norway, Finland and Luxembourg. The company was headquartered in Amsterdam.

TravelBird was declared bankrupt on November 7, 2018. Subsequently, the competitor Secret Escapes took over parts of Travelbird.

history

Due to the supposed confusion and the oversupply of holiday offers on the Internet, the two founders decided in 2010 to create their own platform that provides a specific offer every day. The first employees were hired in 2011 and first four and then six travel offers were offered per day. Thanks to its success on the Dutch market, TravelBird was able to expand to Germany and Belgium in 2011. Subsequently, the offer was expanded in 2012 when the “City Trips” were introduced. The Belgian travel platform mytrip.nl was taken over by the company. In 2013, the markets in Luxembourg , France , Denmark , Austria and Spain were opened up. In addition, the Dutch travel platform BookVandaag and the booking website TravelCoupon.nl were taken over. In 2014, the German Samwer brothers and Rocket Internet first invested in TravelBird through their investment company "Global Founders Capital", which enabled rapid growth. In total, they have a 25.2% share in the company. At the beginning of 2014, the markets of Poland , Italy , Sweden and Great Britain were opened up. In addition, the travel company BookVandaag , which was taken over in 2013, was fully integrated and in May of the same year the markets of Norway , Finland , Hungary and Portugal were added. The total investment of 32.1 million euros was used to expand mobile technology. The booking turnover in 2014 was 95 million euros. In 2015 TravelBird recorded 2.5 million travelers.

Due to insufficient sales, the company withdrew from the markets of Poland, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Portugal in autumn 2015. Of the formerly over 700 employees, around 550 remained in 2016. The Dutch travel company Toerkoop ended the collaboration with Travelbird that had started in July 2015 in March 2016.

TravelBird stopped selling online travel offers on October 31, 2018 and filed for suspension of payments after failing to obtain new funding. The procedure for suspending payments was turned into bankruptcy on November 7, 2018 . TravelBird has thus been declared bankrupt. In November, the Secret Escapes group took over TravelBird. TravelBird is insured by the Stichting Garantiefonds Reisgelden (SGR). Customers who have booked a trip under the SGR guarantee system directly with TravelBird BV can, after checking, assert claims for damages under certain conditions .

On November 13, 2018 it was announced that TravelBird had been taken over by competitor Secret Escapes after bankruptcy . Both companies had already been in takeover negotiations for months, but Secret Escapes withdrew from them shortly before the bankruptcy. Secret Escapes took over the IT structure, brand, logos and customer base from Travel Bird.
