Trebius Verus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trebius Verus (his praenomen is not known) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD .

An inscription found at Castlecary shows that Trebius Verus was prefect of the Cohors I Fida Vardullorum civium Romanorum equitata milliaria , which was stationed in the province of Britannia at the time. A military diploma shows that a Verus was in command of the Cohors I Fida Vardullorum milliaria ; possibly the verus of the diploma and Trebius Verus are identical.

Remarks

  1. The date of the inscription in the EDCS is 142/161, while the RIB dates the inscription to 43/410. According to John Spaul, the missing prenomen is considered typical of the 3rd century.
  2. John Spaul suspects that Trebius Verus only commanded part of the cohort, since he indicates his rank as prefect. According to the RIB, prefects are rare as commanders of a Cohors milliaria .
  3. The dating of the military diploma at EDCS is 139/190, while the RIB considers 159 possible. John Spaul dated the diploma on June 24, 159/161. According to Margaret M. Roxan, Eric Birley suggested 159/160 as a dating.
