In November 2006, ekz.bibliotheksservice GmbH and the specialist conference of library departments expressed the wish to carry out a nationwide campaign for libraries in Germany, based on the models of other countries. That was the beginning of the first campaign in Germany in 2008 with the title “Germany reads. Meeting point library ", which is organized by the German Library Association e. V. and the umbrella association Library & Information Germany (BID) was initiated. In 2009 the name was shortened to “Library as a Meeting Point” and the campaign always had a new motto in the following years.

The nationwide action week has been held annually since 2008. The campaign has its fixed start on October 24th, "Library Day" and ends on October 31st. Presentations, exhibitions, reading hours, library nights, campaigns and services are offered.

The campaign is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . Sponsors are the Borromäusverein e. V., borro medien gmbh, ekz.bibliotheksservice GmbH, Evangelisches Literaturportal e. V., Fachbuchjournal and Sankt Michaelsbund.

aims

The campaign came into being in accordance with the recommendations of the German Bundestag's “Culture in Germany” study commission that libraries are also indispensable educational institutions and should be more closely integrated into educational concepts than before. The aim is to put the recommendation of the commission on a binding political basis in the future and to interlink national library development plans and educational concepts of the federal states and municipalities and to sanction the educational mandate bindingly through a library law.
