Separating bar (software)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A separator bar , even divider bar or splitter called (from English to split "split") is a control with graphical user interfaces . It is used to divide a window (or part of a window) into two individual fields of variable size. By cascading several separating strips, a division into more than just two fields can be achieved.

description

Example: A dividing bar (red; movable) separates the bookmark bar (left) from the main window (right) in Mozilla Firefox

If a separating bar is inserted between two or more control elements or window sections in a window , the user can change the size of these control elements or sections at runtime . The overall size of the window is not changed here; it only changes the respective proportion of the area occupied by the two partial areas separated by the splinter.

It is also possible to use a dividing bar not to divide an entire window but only a part of a window (see example).

A dividing bar is always useful if the user interface of a program (or a form) is to consist of several sub-areas of variable size.

example

In the example on the left, a separating bar (marked in red) can be seen between a bookmark area (left) and the actual page content of the WWW browser . If it is shifted to the left or right, the proportions of the bookmark area or the page content change; however, the overall size of the window does not change. So it is only achieved a different division. It should also be noted that the dividing bar does not divide the entire browser window from top to bottom, but only a large area in the middle of the window; for example, the address bar at the top of the window is not affected by the separator bar.
