education

Since the rail reform (January 1, 1999), train drivers have been checked and approved by the Federal Office of Transport . For this they will receive an ID which they must carry with them when carrying out their work.

Until then, training and exams for train drivers, wagon drivers, shunting engine drivers and tram drivers were the responsibility of the railway companies themselves. Additional tests often had to be taken for journeys on the routes of other companies.

From 2002, trainee drivers were trained by Login Berufsbildung , a joint training organization for many public transport companies. This practice has been given up again and the training takes place directly at the relevant EVU. This is intended to make the training more practical. The training to become a train driver is paid, but the training wage is z. Sometimes much lower than the wages after the training.

In any case, the path to becoming a train driver leads through a second training course; train drivers in Switzerland are experienced career changers. It is not possible to complete an apprenticeship as a train driver.

Career opportunities

A fully trained category B train driver may drive and operate the routes and vehicles listed in the supplementary sheet. Further routes are tracked as part of instruction drives to gain knowledge of the route, in addition to leading vehicles by means of vehicle courses lasting several days. A train driver usually drives one to six different vehicle types, but depending on the area of application and previous experience from other depot locations, far more vehicles can be driven. The ability to drive rail vehicles is checked every five years as part of a periodic examination by the Federal Office of Transport .

In addition to these options in the driving service, there are also other development opportunities for trained train drivers:

The mixed work part-time as a train driver and part-time in another area within the EVU is also offered.
