Tripoli (Olten)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tripoli was called a large workers' settlement in the Swiss canton of Solothurn .

Tripoli was created around 1910 in the area of the municipality of Trimbach in what is now the Rankwog district, when the Hauenstein base tunnel was built with a large influx of Italian (and Turkish) guest workers. The name Tripoli is said to go back to the Italo-Turkish War (1911–1912). In 1911 Italian troops marched into Tripoli and subsequently conquered Tripolitania (now Libya).

Tripoli near Trimbach is to be distinguished from Tripoli in Grenchen ( Grenchenberg tunnel ). Today it is no longer possible to say with any certainty who gave the settlement its name - whether it was the workers themselves or the local population.

The settlement itself is documented by a postmark; Special collections of philatelic value contain dozens of stamps with Tripoli postmarks.
