Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Trolox Equivalent Antioxidative Capacity ( TEAC ) can be used to indicate the antioxidant capacity of a sample. The vitamin E derivative Trolox serves as a reference for the measurement , which is why the result is given in Trolox equivalents. The TEAC value is often used when comparing samples containing polyphenols .

The principle of the measurement is based on the reaction of diammonium-2,2'-azino-di- (3-ethylbenzthiazoline) -6-sulfonate (ABTS) with the antioxidants contained in the medium to be examined . In an oxidative environment, ABTS forms a stable, green-colored radical cation that loses its color when it reacts with substances that have an antioxidant effect. By means of photometric measurements of the ABTS solution at 734 nm before and after a defined period of time (usually 6 minutes) after the addition of antioxidants, an absorbance difference is obtained, from the reduction in absorbance caused by Trolox in different concentrations, the antioxidative capacity the examined substance is determined.
