The Troodos Mountains in Cyprus

The Trooditissa Monastery ( Greek Μοναστήρι Τροοδίτισσας ) is the summer residence of the Bishop of Paphos in Cyprus . It is located at an altitude of around 1400 m at the end of a valley about 5 kilometers from Plano Platres in the Troodos Mountains near Prodromos , the highest village on the island.

The three-aisled central church was built in 1731 on the foundations of its predecessor from the mid-13th century. The founding of the monastery itself is said to go back to the year 990, when an icon of Our Lady ( Panagia Trooditissa), saved from iconoclasm , appeared here and had been hidden by monks in a nearby grotto. According to another legend, the icon is said to have been found floating on the sea in Limassol and later, after the conquest of Cyprus by the Ottomans in 1570/71 , was hidden in the mountains. In addition to this silver-clad icon, a metal-studded belt gives many believers a reason to go on pilgrimage to 'Irooditissa. It is said to have fertility effects when a childless woman puts it around her body. A connection with a pre-Christian cult is likely to be seen here - the monastery is sometimes also referred to as that of Panagia Aphroditissa (the All Saints Aphrodite).

The first written mention of the monastery comes from a copy of a letter from the 14th century. The monk Damaskinos and his successor Abbot Pangkratios had to revitalize the monastery from 1939 after it burned down in 1842 and had to be closed. Since the late 1960s, restorations have been carried out and the facility expanded.
