La Gamba tropical station

The tropical station La Gamba in the rainforest of the Austrians in Costa Rica is an Austrian research, teaching and further education institution, which aims to make a contribution to the research of tropical rainforests , to arouse interest in the conservation and research of the rainforest and to arouse laypeople and to give nature lovers the opportunity to deepen their understanding of nature in the rainforest.

The station is located in the south of Costa Rica on the edge of the Piedras Blancas National Park in the rainforest of the Austrians . This species-rich tropical forest covers 142 km² and was saved from deforestation through the initiative of the Rainforest Association of Austrians . From the corrugated iron hut bought in 1993, two Austrian biologists, Werner Huber and Anton Weissenhofer , created the tropical station La Gamba with the support of the “Rainforest Association of Austrians” and the University of Vienna . The station includes several buildings, scientific equipment and a botanical garden.

The tropical station is an important tool for the conservation of the Esquinas Forest, one of the last remaining lowland rainforests on the Pacific coast of Central America. It represents an ideal basis for students, scientists and interested parties to pursue their questions and offers the opportunity to deepen their understanding of nature. As an integral part of the community of La Gamba, it is also an important point of contact for the local population. a. to spread the idea of ​​nature conservation.

For many years, the employees of the tropical station have also been involved in development aid projects in the region. For example, the former lumberjacks were trained as national park rangers and landscape conservationists.
