Truly is a 1982 song by Lionel Richie , written by him and produced by him and James Anthony Carmichael. The ballad became a number one hit in the United States and Canada . At the 1983 Grammy Awards , the song won in the category of Best Male Vocal Performance - Pop (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male).

In the song, the protagonist says to his lover how much he loves her and will always be there for her.

history

The song Truly appeared on the album Lionel Richie . The song was released worldwide in September 1982 and was released on the first single from Lionel Richie's debut album of the same name.

Truly reached number 1 on the American Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks , in the fall of 1982. The song also reached number 1 in the Adult Contemporary Charts and number 2 in the R&B charts for nine weeks. Truly also reached number 6 in the UK singles charts .

Music video

In the plot of the music video, Lionel Richie performs the song with a piano live at a concert .

Cover versions

Joe Cocker interpreted the song in 1993. The British singer and actor Steven Houghton released another cover version of Truly in March 1998 , which reached number 23 in the UK Top 40 . A cover version by John Mellencamp was released in 2005.
