Steven Houghton (born February 16, 1971 in Sheffield ) is an English singer , actor and musical performer .
biography
Born in South Yorkshire County , Houghton attended the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds after graduating from high school . He then moved to London and worked as an actor in the West End there , a. a. in the musicals Miss Saigon , Blood Brothers , Cats and Grease . Houghton received an Olivier Award nomination for his role in Spend, Spend, Spend . He also acted in 1997 to 1998, the role of firefighter Gregg Blake in the ITV - series London's Burning .
His breakthrough as a singer came in late 1997 with the song Wind Beneath My Wings , which Sheena Easton recorded for her album Madness, Money and Music in 1982 . In versions by Lou Rawls (1983), Lee Greenwood (1984), Bette Midler (1989) and Bill Tarney (1994), the title has already appeared in the charts several times . Houghton's recording rose to number 3 on the UK charts . In March of the following year he had another success in England with Truly , a cover version of the Lionel Richie hit from 1982. The song did not get past 23rd place.
The accompanying album, which entered the UK charts at the end of 1997 and reached number 21, includes additional cover songs , including new versions of Bill Withers ' Ain't No Sunshine , The Hollies ' The Air That I Breathe and Elton John's Sorry Seems to Be the hardest word . Since 1998 Houghton has worked primarily as an actor, e.g. B. in the series Doctors , Bernard's Watch and Coronation Street .
