The Tryfan and Cadfan locomotives were small tank locomotives built in 1902 and 1904 for the Moel Tryfan quarry in North Wales . The track width was 23 inches (584 mm).

The locomotives built by Hunslet corresponded in structure and most of the technical data of the Alice Class , but were a bit narrower and above all lower because they had to drive through a very narrow tunnel that connected the open pit of the quarry with the processing workshops.

To protect the driver, the machines had a driver's cab roof that was curved to match the tunnel profile and had no side openings. The cab floor was - compared to the Alice Class - slightly lowered; Access was from the rear because in the event of a breakdown, it would not have been possible to exit the tunnel from the side. There was no circulation.

The Cadfan differed from the Tryfan in that the chimney and driver's cab were about 10 cm lower. The reason for this is unclear.

At least the Cadfan was temporarily loaned to a neighboring quarry to bring the slate to the upper end of the inclined elevator that connected the railways of several quarries with the North West Narrow Gauge Railway and later the Welsh Highland Railway . The Moel Tryfan quarry itself was connected to this inclined elevator via its own inclined elevator, which could not be used by the locomotives.

Both locomotives were still insured in 1940, but were scrapped in February 1941.
