The Taganrog Chekhov Museum ( Russian Литературный музей А. П. Чехова , Literaturny musei AP Chekhova ) has been housed in the former Second Taganrog Boys' High School since May 29, 1935 . More than 1,600 exhibits on the life and work of Anton Chekhov can be viewed there in Taganrog October Street 9 .

The grammar school was built in the early mid-19th century by the Italian Francesco Boffo in the classical style. The pupil Anton Chekhov attended grammar school from 1868 to 1879. The almost twelve years of school attendance provided material for the letters and telegrams as well as the stories The Repetitor , The Literature Teacher , Ariadna and The Man in the Sheath . A. F. Djakonow, at the time the inspector at the high school pictured above on the right, is said to have been the model for the figure of the man in the case.
