Hafnerhaus (Enns)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hafnerhaus is a listed residential and commercial building in the Upper Austrian town of Enns . Address is Alter Schmidberg 10.

history

In the Middle Ages, the building used to be the mikveh , i.e. the ritual bath of the medieval Jewish community in Enns. The year the mikvah was created is unknown. It was erected outside the city wall in a suburban building at the foot of the city hill, where the groundwater flow was easily accessible.

It was first mentioned in a document in 1426, a few years after the expulsion of the Jews from Enns in 1420/21 as part of the Vienna Geserah . Duke Albrecht V gave the Tuckhaus, "where the jews were there," to the Enns hospital. Until well into the 16th century, the building was referred to in the sources as the Tuckhaus.

In 2010 the house was completely refurbished, today there is a gallery and event rooms.
