Tunera (Pl. Tuneren) are viewing platforms located directly on the coast for viewing schools of tuna in the Kvarner Bay .

functionality

In this region there were few places with a high catch rate. These were often difficult to access because they are located on steep karst coasts . Therefore, fishing was done using nets that were thrown into the water near the coast. Fixed tuners were attached to the tuna 's resting places - bays or passage points. These were climbed with ladders lying across the sea. From the tuners you could see the tuna in the shallow water from above.

history

Fishing by means of tuners was first mentioned in 1438. The government in Rijeka allowed the fishermen on their territory to create tuners. In the middle of the 17th century, Jesuits from Rijeka were also given the right to set up tuners, which was initially reserved for the aristocracy ( Zrinski and Frankopan ). At first the fishermen used their tuners themselves. Later they leased the devices, which brought in greater profit than the extraction of resources and the cultivation of vines.

Today tuners can be found on islands of the north Dalmatian and Istrian coast .
