Tuomas Iisalo

Tuomas Iisalo (born July 29, 1982 ) is a Finnish basketball coach . He has been the head coach of the Crailsheim Merlins since March 2016 .

career

Iisalo, who lived in Berlin for four years as a child in the 1980s , was active during his playing time for the Finnish first division clubs Honka Espoo , Kouvolan Kouvot and Torpan Pojat Helsinki . The 1.95-meter-tall winger won the national cup twice and played for the Finnish senior team at the European Championships in 2009 and 2011, among others. He played 57 senior internationals.

After the end of his playing career, Iisalo took over the position of head coach at the first division team Tapiolan Honka in the 2014/15 season and was then assistant coach of the Finnish female U15 team. In March 2016 he was signed by the German Bundesliga club Crailsheim Merlins  . The league in the Bundesliga was missed, but Iisalo received a contract extension and looked after the team after relegation in the 2nd Bundesliga ProA .

In the 2017/18 season, Iisalo led Crailsheim back to the Bundesliga as runner-up in the second division. He managed to stay in the Bundesliga with Crailsheim in the 2018/19 season, which was only certain after a win on the last match day and was called a "miracle" due to the circumstances. At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Crailsheim developed under Iisalo's leadership into a surprise team in the Bundesliga and was in first place in the table after five wins from the first five games. His team was third in the table when the 2019/20 season was interrupted in spring 2020 due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus . Even since Iisalo was no longer available at the Bundesliga season's final tournament in June 2020 due to the special circumstances, his team remained without a win and ended the season in tenth place.
