The Turkmen Carpet Museum is one of the most important museums in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat and is dedicated to the world-famous Turkmen carpets .

history

The Turkmen Carpet Museum was officially opened on October 24, 1994. The current building in the center of Ashgabat has been the home of the museum since 2008. The traditional art of carpet making in Turkmenistan is also part of the national identity of the young state of Turkmenistan and is conveyed in the museum.

building

The carpet museum building, which was completed in 2008, is centrally located and has a total area of around 5000 square meters. The entrance gate is designed in the style of a golden carpet and traditional Turkmen carpet patterns are depicted on the outside walls of the building. There is a garden around the museum building.

exhibition

The museum houses one of the largest collections of Turkmen carpets in the world on two floors. The aim of the exhibition is to present the Turkmen tradition of carpet making and its development over the past centuries. For this purpose, exhibits of various ages can be found in the exhibition, including several exhibits dating from the 17th century . Among the carpets is also the largest hand-woven carpet in the world, which holds this record with an area of 301 square meters. The carpet is dedicated to the tenure of President Saparmyrat Nyýazow . Another carpet shows the Nyýazows family. The personality cult around the only two presidents in the history of independent Turkmenistan, Saparmyrat Nyýazow and the incumbent president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow can also be found in the Turkmen Carpet Museum. Another interesting work is called Carpet of the Brotherhood of All Turkmen Tribes and combines stylistic elements from the various Turkmen regions and tribes.

institution

The carpet museum also has an institutional function in the carpet trade. Before Turkmen carpets can be exported, an official permit must be obtained which certifies that the guidelines and restrictions for the export of carpets have been met. This permit can only be issued by those responsible for the Turkmen Carpet Museum.
