Turku Student Village (Finnish: Turun ylioppilaskylä, or Yo-kylä for short, Swedish: Studentbyn) is the largest student residence in Finland . Almost 3,500 people live in 95 three-story apartment blocks. The Student Village is located in Turku , in the Nummi district and is therefore close to the city center. The area offers many hiking trails, forests and small parks along the nearby Aura River , which runs right by the Student Village. The University of Turku , Åbo Akademi and the Turku University of Applied Sciences are also within walking distance from the Student Village.

History and foundation

The Student Village is owned by "The Student Village Foundation of Turku", or TYS for short, which was founded in 1966 by the "Student Union of Turku University". In addition to this facility, TYS also offers many other housing options in Turku. The idea for the Student Village was born in 1959 and was then implemented from 1969 to 1979. It was designed by Jan Söderlund and Erkki Valovirta. The buildings were renovated between 1994 and 2003 and offer various housing options.

The Student Village is divided into a west and an east side. On the west side you will find the office of the Student Village Foundation of Turku (TYS), as well as several apartment blocks with one and two-room apartments and a communal kitchen. There are also one and two-room apartments with their own kitchen and garden. This part also houses a day-care center, a shop, a bar and a spa hotel. There is also a mini golf course and various sports fields. The east side offers rooms for shared apartments, one- and two-room apartments and family apartments. There are public washrooms and saunas for the residents of the Student Village throughout the site. There is also enough parking space and there are good connections with public transport.

Housing options for exchange students

The Student Village also offers accommodation for exchange students . You can rent an 18 square meter room, including your own bathroom, on the west side of the Student Village for a period of 5 months. These rooms are equipped with a bed including a mattress, a wardrobe, a desk with a chair, a refrigerator and a cloakroom. There are 12 of these rooms in each hallway and the tenants share a communal kitchen. Electricity, internet, sauna, washrooms and maintenance service are included in the rent.
