The Turmoil Point ( English for Tumultspitze ) is a headland that forms the western end of Bristol Island in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands . The impressive and up to 400 m high formation ends in a snow-covered summit , which is a striking landmark when viewed from the west .
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it after 1974 because of the violent wind conditions encountered here when helicopters took off from HMS Protector in 1962 and 1964.
