history

The Mülheim gymnastics community was founded on September 6, 1879. The first general meeting took place on November 2, 1879, at which Friedrich Laufenberg was elected first chairman. The club colors were based on the city colors of Mülheim blue and white.

Since there were no sports halls yet, the gymnastics business took place in the premises of Schankwirt Engels, the treasurer at the time. When the practice area became too small, they moved to the Schützenhalle on Frankfurter Strasse. In 1901, the Pestalozzistraße elementary school was completed and the gymnastics community received permission to use the newly built gym. In this way, the gymnastics could be maintained even in winter. In 1909 the TGM already had 296 active and 205 inactive members. In 1910 an own gymnastics and sports field was bought.

After Mülheim was incorporated by Cologne, the club's colors were changed to blue-white-red. With the outbreak of the First World War and the drafting for military service, the number of members shrank and gymnastics almost completely came to a standstill. The club's own sports field also had to be sold in 1918.

After the war, sports activities were completely suspended due to a ban by the British occupying forces . However, through the efforts of the first chairman Barthel Gödde, gymnastics could be started again at the end of 1919. In addition to gymnastics, football and fistball were played. However, both departments had to be abandoned in 1922 due to lack of space. The handball department was created for this in 1923. In 1924 the swimming department was founded. In the years that followed, the number of members rose steadily and reached more than 700 members in the mid-30s. In the following war years, the gymnastics business was continued, especially in the children's and youth gymnastics departments, but had to be completely stopped after the destruction of the sports hall in Pestalozzistraße.

After the Second World War , the somewhat preserved hall of the Genovevastraße Lyceum was repaired with their own funds together with the Mülheimer Turnverein. The following years were characterized by the gymnastics, fistball and handball departments. The TGM often and successfully took part in gymnastics festivals, national youth games and other apparatus gymnastics competitions. In the mid-1950s, the fistball division took part in the league game with 6 teams. The handball department also provided several teams. However, the change in the department management and the lack of suitable training opportunities in 1962 led to the dissolution of the handball department.

With the opening of the Genoveva pool in December 1966, the swimming department was revitalized. The focus was on swimming lessons and the acquisition of swimming sports badges.

In 1967 the judo department was founded, from which the martial arts department later developed. In addition to judo, ju-jitsu, taekwondo, streetfight and weight training are now offered.

Also in 1967 the badminton department was founded. The National Badminton Association (BLV) was joined in September 1969 and has been participating in the league games of the BLV since 1970.

In 1975 the table tennis and volleyball departments joined the club. The table tennis department took part in games with four teams in 1978. The volleyball division joined the volleyball association in 1980.

In 1981 the gymnastics community had 474 male and 559 female members, exceeding the magical 1000 mark. In February 1981, Gisela Pressell was elected first chairman of the association. She was the first woman to head the club.

In 1989 the gymnastics community took part in the carnival parade in Mülheim. The TGM currently has 8 departments (as of June 2008).
