Publius Tuscilius

The inscription ( RIB 2041 )

Publius Tuscilius [] asinianus (his cognomen is only partially known; however, his name may have been Gaius Arrius Ursinianus ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 2nd century AD .

A dedicatory inscription found at Aballava Castle and dated 151/200 shows that Tuscilius was the tribune of the Cohors I Nervana Germanorum miliaria equitata , which was stationed in the province of Britannia at that time .

If the EDCS reading is correct, then he was registered in the Tribus Claudia .

Remarks

  1. In the (meanwhile lost) inscription, of which only one drawing still exists today, the name is read differently, so that there are different suggestions for the name. The reading at EDCS is [Arr] ius C (ai) f (ilius) Claud (ia) [Ur] sinianu [s] , at RIB P (ublius) Tusc [i] l (ius) CLND asinianu [s] and with John Spaul [] Arrius [] sinianu [] . According to John Spaul, names like P (ublius) Tuscilius [] asinianus , Q (uintus) Pius Asinianus, or G (aius) Arrius Ursinianus have been suggested; for further readings and possible names see RIB.
