history

Poster for the exhibition of new fashions , Kersten & Tuteur from 1912 with the address Tuteur Haus

The building was built in 1886 by CF Schwenke as a Ullmann commercial building. From 1912 to 1913 the commercial building was rebuilt by the owner Kersten and Tuteur by the architect Hermann Muthesius after a limited competition. Hermann Muthesius had the new idea of the corner shop window implemented here for the first time. This idea was later adopted in other commercial buildings such as the Kaufhaus des Westens. Muthesius oriented himself here on a classicistic style that is based on objectivity. During the GDR era, the profiles of the renovated facade were cut off and the pillars and pilaster strips covered with Elbe sandstone slabs. In 2006 the Tuteur House was modernized as a commercial and office building according to the planning of the Patzschke architects. For example, the natural stone facade made of Thuringian travertine was reconstructed using the rediscovered original substance. However, the figures by the sculptor Alexander Höfer placed in front of the pillars are no longer there .

description

The reinforced concrete skeleton structure with a copper cover is characterized by the three-part, two-story shop window, the arches of which are framed by lush building decorations. A consistent pillar facade, customary in 1910, is part of the design.
