Twentieth Century is a geometric sans serif typeface designed by Sol Hess for Lanston Monotype in 1937 . It was created to compete with the successful Futura typeface for Monotype's hot metal typesetting system . Like the Futura, it has a one-story 'ɑ' and a straight 'j' without a bend.

The Twentieth Century is a very large family of fonts best known for a limited selection of styles that are bundled with many Microsoft products such as Office. There are numerous other variants, including versions for very small texts and an Art Deco-influenced title capital draft, Twentieth Century Poster with rounded capitals. Century also served as inspiration for Century Gothic , designed by Monotype in 1991.
