Two Jazzers

The two Hungarian singers Lászlo Mocsányi (1903–1982) and Tibor Lakos (1903–1945) appeared as singing duettists under the name Two Jazzers .

Lászlo Mocsányi and Tibor Lakos

Both were born in Budapest in 1903 , attended the same school in their youth and had a thorough musical education. Lakos had studied with Emil Baré at the Budapest Music Academy , Mocsanyi was a student at the Berlin Academy of the Arts with Engelbert Humperdinck .

At the age of 25, on July 3, 1928, they were heard for the first time on the Budapest radio . In autumn 1928 they made their first record for Columbia, Austria . They quickly became known in Vienna and soon in all of Austria. In February 1929 they were engaged to the famous Charell -Revue in Berlin, then to the no less famous KaDeKo ( cabaret of comedians ).

In Germany they recorded for the record companies Homocord , Ultraphon and Artiphon ( Hermann Eisner ), appeared in front of the microphone on March 19, 1929 on the Berlin radio and attracted the interest of the “Terra” film company. At the end of 1930 they returned to Budapest. Prominent orchestras (such as Oscar Joost , Eddy Walis and Teddy Kline ) had accompanied their performances beforehand; but now they had developed their very own style. They sang mainly in Hungarian, but also in German and English, offered jazzy scat singing with imitation instruments and comedic interludes.

In 1932 they founded the “Harlem Melody Band”, with whom they made and published recordings on their own label “Radius and Weekend” in the following years.

There is no reliable news for the period after 1934. Tibor Lakos died in Budapest in 1945, not much older than forty. Lászlo Mocsányi died in 1982 at the age of 79.
