Lists on the subject

The Type 01 LMAT is a Japanese shoulder-mounted anti-tank guided weapon. Development began in 1993 by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and lasted until 2001. During the development phase, it was referred to as the XATM-5.

history

When a successor system for the Sumitomo FT-84 was sought, the Agency Technical Research and Development Institute decided to develop an infrared-guided fire-and-forget weapon analogous to the Javelin Medium Antiarmor Weapon System . In 1993 Kawasaki Heavy Industries was commissioned with the development, the first test shot was carried out in 1996.

technology

The system is similar in every way to the American FGM-148 Javelin . The weapon system consists of a device for observation and target acquisition as well as the launch tube, which contains the missile guided by an infrared seeker. The maximum range of the missile is secret, its weight compared to the Javelin is only slightly less (400 grams ), the performance parameters will therefore be similar. In contrast, the LMAT anti-tank weapon uses an uncooled IR seeker and the launch unit is heavier. The missile also takes off in soft launch . Here, too, you can choose between a direct attack and an impact from above (“top attack”).
