description

Operator position on the Type 79 Jyu-MAT anti-tank weapon

The missile is transported in a cylindrical transport container. The system is similar to the European MILAN , for example through wire steering. During the flight, the missile unwinds an entrained wire that is connected to the target system on the starter. The system then uses the data transmitted by the optics to calculate the angle between the rocket and the target. These data are converted into control commands that are passed on to the missile's control unit via the wire. There are two missiles available:

  • Shaped charge against armored vehicles, ignites on impact;
  • Fragmentation warhead against landing craft, detonates after penetrating the target.

As a special feature, the 79 Jyu-MAT can also be operated remotely from a distance of up to 50 meters from the starter. The weapon is operated by a single person. It is also used by the Mitsubishi Type 89 armored personnel carrier.
