The subway Gwangju is the metro of the city of Gwangju in the southeast of South Korea . It opened in 2004 , making Gwangju the fifth city in South Korea to have a metro system.

Construction of line 1 began in 1996 . Operations on the 14- station section from Nokdong to Sangmu, which is 11.9 km long, began on April 28, 2004 . The line currently has 20 stations and runs via the airport and the Seongjeong-ri train station to Pyeongdong. The subways are currently a maximum of 4 railcars .

A second line will run from the south to the northeast from 2008 and cross the existing line at Geumnamno 4-ga station (the platform for the new line already exists). In addition, three other metro lines are planned, the construction of which, let alone the opening date, is uncertain.

The subway is structurally and organizationally similar to the subway in Seoul.
