Submarine No. 361 (China)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The submarine no. 361 was a submarine of the People's Republic of China . It belonged to the Ming class and was built in the 1960s. The boat was 76 meters long, displaced 2,113 tons of water submerged and had a top speed of 18 knots . It had six torpedo tubes in the bow and two in the stern.

The ship was in a military maneuver on April 16, 2003 east of the Neichangshan Islands when it came to a technical problem. The 70 crew members died of gas poisoning. The ship was discovered by fishermen . It was later towed to Lushun Port.

In June 2003, the demotion of two admirals and eight officers in connection with the incident was announced. The guiding and communication errors given as reasons raised the suspicion that boat 361 might have been accidentally destroyed in the course of a weapon test.
